India's Foremost Learn & Earn University

At Orchid University in North Sikkim, every student earns a degree, an apprenticeship and an income from day one.

Orchid University campus

Tucked into the mountains of Mangan in North Sikkim, Orchid University is rewriting the rules of higher education in India. It is a UGC-recognised State Private University built on a simple but radical conviction: that learning and earning should never be separated. Here, a student does not wait three or four years to discover whether their degree has any value in the working world. From the very first day of class, every Orchidian earns a degree, holds a real apprenticeship, and draws an income. This is what we mean by being India's foremost Learn & Earn university, and it shapes everything from the curriculum to the campus.

For too long, the Indian graduate's story has followed a painful arc: years of study, a certificate, and then the anxious scramble to translate theory into employment. Orchid was founded to close that gap before it ever opens. Our promise is plain to families weighing the cost of a degree against the uncertainty of a job market: at Orchid, education pays its own way.

The SEEL Framework

Everything we build rests on the SEEL Framework, four pillars that move in sequence and reinforce one another: Skilling, Education, Employment, and Livelihood. Most universities stop at education. Many skilling institutes never reach a recognised degree. Orchid weaves all four into a single, continuous journey, so that a student gains practical competence, academic depth, a place in the workforce, and a sustainable livelihood, all under one roof.

This is not theory bolted onto lectures as an afterthought. Our degrees are work-integrated and apprenticeship-embedded, designed in step with the National Credit Framework (NCrF), which means the hours a student spends learning on the job count toward their qualification. Skilling is not a detour from the degree; it is the degree. Education is not divorced from employment; it leads directly into it. And employment is not the finish line; it is the foundation of a lasting livelihood that students can carry back to their families and communities.

How Learn While You Earn Works

The Learn While You Earn model turns a familiar timeline on its head. Instead of studying first and earning later, Orchidians do both at once. Each student is placed with an industry partner and trained on the job while pursuing their degree, receiving a paid on-job training stipend throughout. The classroom and the workplace are not separate worlds; they are two halves of the same education.

That model is only possible because of the company Orchid keeps. The university maintains a network of more than 800 industry partners, spanning sectors and regions, that host apprentices, mentor students, and increasingly hire the very Orchidians they have trained. For students, this means a degree that arrives alongside genuine professional experience, a working reference, and a head start on a career. For employers, it means access to talent that is already productive on day one.

A typical Orchid journey looks like this:

  • Admission and orientation into one of the university's 12 schools, matched to a student's aptitude and ambition.
  • Placement with an industry partner, where structured, paid on-job training begins immediately.
  • Integrated study that blends academic coursework with workplace learning, with credits earned in both, aligned to the NCrF.
  • Graduation as an Orchidian: degree in hand, an apprenticeship completed, an income already earned, and a professional network already built.

Who Orchid Is For

Orchid is for the ambitious student who refuses to choose between studying and supporting themselves. It is for the first-generation learner whose family cannot afford years without income. It is for the young person from a small town or a hill village who has the talent but not the connections, and who deserves a path into India's industries that does not depend on privilege. With 12 schools spanning a broad range of disciplines, there is room here for a wide spectrum of interests and aspirations, all served by the same earn-as-you-learn promise.

The university's setting matters too. Rooted in Upper Singhik Malling, Dzong Koti, in the Mangan District of North Sikkim, Orchid is deliberately planted where opportunity has historically been scarce, bringing world-class, work-integrated higher education to a region that has long sent its young people away in search of it. The result is an institution that is local in its commitment and national in its reach.

That spirit is captured in the words our graduates carry with them: Skilled to Lead. Rooted to Serve. Connected to Succeed. An Orchid education is designed to make all three true at once, to send out leaders who are equipped with real skill, grounded in service to their communities, and connected to the networks that let them thrive. In a country hungry for graduates who can do as well as know, Orchid University offers something genuinely rare: a degree that earns its keep from the very first day.
